Why November Is the Month to Book Your Fall Photos

Little Rock summers hang on longer than most people would like — average highs are still sitting in the mid-80s through September — but by late October, the city finally starts to cool off, and by November we're typically looking at pleasant, crisp highs in the 60s. That short window is exactly why November is the single best month to get your fall photos done.

Why the timing matters

Once the heat breaks, Arkansas actually delivers on fall color — but that color, combined with genuinely comfortable shooting weather, only lasts a few weeks before the trees go bare and November's cooler, damper pattern sets in fully. Booking early in the month gets you the best of both: cooler temperatures without losing the color.

The bigger reason to book in November: the holidays

This is the part people underestimate. If you want a photo you can actually turn into a holiday card, a family gift, or something to share with relatives you only see once a year, November is the last realistic window to get it done, edited, and in hand before the holiday season is already underway. Wait until Thanksgiving weekend to book, and you're racing a clock that's already run out for most printers and card services.

What makes a November session worth it

  • Comfortable weather — no more fighting Arkansas humidity or full-sun heat during the session itself

  • Genuine fall color — warm tones in the background without needing to travel anywhere

  • Built-in shareability — a fresh family photo lands differently in November than it does any other time of year, right when everyone's already thinking about the people they want to send something to

  • Enough turnaround time — booking early in the month leaves room for editing, printing, and shipping before the holidays actually arrive

Where to shoot it

Anywhere with tree cover works well this time of year, River Market's green spaces, a park, or a spot we scout together based on what colors are looking best that week. Parks and neighborhood streets tend to hold color a bit longer into the month than more exposed, open areas, so if you're booking later in November, those are worth prioritizing.

Breaking November down week by week

Early November (the first week or two) usually still carries some warmth left over from October, along with strong color and generally the most comfortable shooting conditions of the whole fall. Mid-November is where things really start to feel like fall, cooler, crisper air, and color that's typically at or just past its peak depending on the year's specific weather. Late November starts to edge toward winter, with color thinning out and temperatures dropping enough that outfit layers become a real consideration rather than a styling choice. If you have flexibility, the first half of the month is generally the sweet spot for the widest window of good color and comfortable temperatures together.

Why waiting until December usually backfires

By December, Arkansas's brief fall color window has typically passed, tree cover thins out significantly, and average temperatures drop enough that outdoor sessions become a much harder sell for anyone with young kids or family members who don't love the cold. On top of the weather shift, December is also the busiest month for holiday obligations, travel, and everyone else's calendars, which makes it dramatically harder to actually get a group photo scheduled, let alone edited and turned into cards before the holidays actually arrive.

Planning your outfit for a November session

Cooler November temperatures actually open up more styling options than summer sessions allow, think layers, light jackets, scarves, and richer, warmer tones that wouldn't hold up well in July heat. A light jacket or cardigan photographs well and gives you something practical for the actual weather that day, rather than fighting through a session while underdressed for the cold.

Turning your session into an actual card

Once your gallery is delivered, most printing services need anywhere from a few days to two weeks depending on the product and shipping method you choose. Booking early in November, rather than waiting for the back half of the month, builds in enough buffer that a printing delay or a reshoot request doesn't put your holiday card timeline at risk.

Don't wait until the trees are bare

Fall color and comfortable weather in Arkansas is a narrow window, not a guarantee — the earlier in November you book, the more color and comfort you're likely to get. Reach out here to grab a date while the weather (and the leaves) are still cooperating.
